Chapter Seven

— &—

Jai

Saturday, December 20th

Derek was looking at her. Staring, really. It took Jai a moment to fully wake, but when she did, she had to bite the inside of her lip to keep herself from breaking into a goofy grin.

“What you grinning about, girl?”

“Nothing.” She rolled away, turning her back to him on the bed the bed . There was no way she was going to tell Derek what she was thinking. In the breakup with Elliot, Jai had been called many things. Needy, crazy, bitchy, you name it. So moving forward, Jai’s primary goal in whatever she had going with Derek was to not be a needy, crazy bitch. What she was smiling about definitely fell into the categories of needy and crazy.

Derek wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. “Alright. I’m gonna tickle the hell out of you until you tell me.” He slid his hands underneath the oversized T-shirt she wore, resting them against her stomach to emphasize his threat.

“Uh - uh, don’t do that!” She giggled as he glided his fingers over her bare skin.

“You know what you’ve gotta do to get out of it, right?”

Jai wiggled out of his arms so that she could turn to face him. “Do you think we’re moving too fast?” She dropped her eyes as soon as the words left her lips. Damn. Scratch needy off the list.

Derek raised an eyebrow but didn’t respond until he had pulled her closer, enough to press a soft kiss against her forehead. “I think you’re changing the subject, but I’ll go with it. Explain.”

“Well,” Jai tilted her head back, so that she could look into his face while she spoke. Big mistake. As soon as her eyes landed on his, she felt familiar warmth between her thighs. Happened every time. She quickly turned her gaze to a safer view, the freckles sprinkled across his nose. “I’m in your bed.”

“Sleeping. You’re in my bed because we were sleeping. That’s it. And what, you don’t like kicking it with me?”

Jai shook her head. “No, I love being with you, It’s just… We’ve only really been talking for what? Three months? It just feels like we got really close really fast, and that…”

“Scares you?” Derek used a finger under her chin to tip her head up so that she was looking right into his eyes. Jai simply nodded. “So you think I’m somebody you should be scared of?” Another nod. “And why is that?”

“Well, because,” Jai said, with an exaggerated roll of her eyes. How could he not know what she meant? “You’re handsome, well-employed, not an obvious psychopath. And single. It’s too good to be true, and I’m just waiting on a girlfriend or wife to jump out of the shadows and kick my ass.”

Derek threw his head back to laugh. “Are you serious, Jai?”

“As a heart attack.” She sat up, propping herself against the dark mahogany headboard. “This all has a very ‘too good to be true’ vibe about it, and I just don’t want to be naive about it.
